Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is designed to help those who have a low tolerance for pain or are highly anxious about going to the dentist to feel more relaxed. At Wiltshire Family Dental, we understand that sometimes trips to the dentist can feel scary, and we want to put your mind at ease! We offer several types of sedation based on your individual needs.
- Oral Sedation: This is the most common form of sedation in dentistry, as the sedative is administered in the form of a pill. The patient will be asked to ingest the pill one hour prior to the procedure.
- Conscious Sedation: This technique is also known as inhaled minimal sedation, and involves the use of nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) to put the patient into a semi-conscious state. The dentist has full control over how much gas the patient receives and can adjust it as necessary. It is also the only technique where the patient may drive themselves to and from the appointment.
- IV Sedation: Patients with severe phobias or those who require more complex procedures will likely benefit most from intravenous sedation. IV sedation is known as “Twilight Sedation”, where you’re conscious, but not very aware of your surroundings. It is fast-acting and can be completely monitored by your dentist and a nurse.
- General Anesthesia: Usually only reserved for the most complex or invasive procedures, the patient would be rendered fully unconscious for the entire procedure. It is usually considered a last resort, as most dental procedures benefit from having the patient awake and able to answer questions.
